Abstract:

Welcome to DR. PAI, the Desktop ROCK Linux Application and Package
Index. This document aims to be a guide of the most packages included in
Desktop ROCK Linux (dRock). It is neither intended to describe general
Linux topics like installation, configuration or usage of packages, nor
to make a guidance to dRock. The last-mentioned issue is covered in the
ROCK Linux Guide written by Pjotr Prins.

I speak intentionally about the most packages, because the not-mentioned
ones are for administration or not everydays purposes and searching for
them would mean, you are more experienced in Linux, not needing this
    guide anymore.

Introduction:

Migrating from other systems, you're propably used to have one solution
for every job. But one feature of Linux (and a problem for newbies) is
the big amount of applications for every purpose. Just have a look at
freshmeat.net for editors (p.ex.) and you will find thousands of them.
    Which one to use?

At this point dRock and this guide will help you. Among all the other
distributions, we're composing software for users. But not everything,
what exists in the world, ending up in over 5,000 packages, but just the
most usable or known ones. Of course you can continue trying and
    using alternatives.

I tried to sort the software in catagories of usage, having in mind
common jobs on a computer. You have a job to do and want to solve it,
using the minimal amount of time and not beeing involved in testing any
alpha-state releases. Just look into our guide and use the package(s) of
    your choice.

So have a lot of fun and enjoy the power of the penguin.
